San Telmo Sunday Walk

Cobblestones, an old market, and a slow Sunday.

San Telmo Sunday Walk — San Telmo, Buenos Aires

A slow Sunday stroll down the cobblestones of San Telmo, from the iron-roofed covered market to the antiques spread around Plaza Dorrego. On Sundays the plaza and the length of Defensa fill with stalls, tango, and coffee. Pause at Bar El Federal, the oldest bar in the city, then let the walk settle under the old trees of Parque Lezama.

On this plan

  • Cobblestone streets of old San Telmo
  • The iron-roofed Mercado de San Telmo
  • Sunday antiques fair on Plaza Dorrego
  • Coffee at Bar El Federal
  • Ends under the trees of Parque Lezama
  • Easy and flat the whole way

Your afternoon

  1. 11:00 AM · Start at Bar Seddon
A coffee on Defensa to begin
  2. Mercado de San Telmo
    Wander the iron-roofed market
  3. Bar El Federal
The oldest bar in the city, at Carlos Calvo and Peru
  4. Plaza Dorrego
The antiques fair and some tango
  5. Parque Lezama
    End under the old trees

What to bring

  • Water
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sunglasses
  • Cash for the stalls

Getting there

Subte Linea C or E to Independencia, then a few blocks east into San Telmo

The fair is busy and friendly by day. Keep an eye on your bag in the crowd, and enjoy Parque Lezama while the light is still up, since this edge of the barrio is quieter at night.
